Pop-Up Adventure Playground

What are Pop-Up Adventure Playgrounds?

Pop-Up Adventure Playgrounds are free events organized in parks, community centers, streets, and other open spaces. Open to families with children of all ages and abilities, Pop-Up Adventure Playgrounds feature many open-ended materials such as cardboard boxes, tyres, pots, tapes, strings, fabrics and other everyday objects.

Children are given free-reign to play with whatever they want and however they want. They can create, build, and experiment with the materials, learning through play while working on their social skills, independence, decision-making, resilience, and healthy risk-taking.

Upcoming Pop-Ups

Check out our Facebook page for details of the upcoming pop-ups.

Why Do We Host Pop-Ups?

Unless invited to join or if asked for assistance, adults are encouraged to sit back and let the children lead the play! Our aim is to bring freely chosen self-directed play back into the lives of children living in today’s fast-paced, digital and competitive world.

This kind of play offers the children a taste of the kampong spirit - carefree play with other children of all ages and of all racial and social background, in the vast outdoors, in just the way they want to. We believe that anything we do to improve our public spaces for children's play and recreation will have a gradual and positive impact on the whole community - making Singapore a child-friendly city.

Providing quality play opportunities accessible to every child regardless of age, race or social status requires a network of inter-connected social and environmental support. At Chapter Zero we work in collaboration with parents, day-cares, schools, and local agencies to bring change that enhances these play opportunities in parks, playgrounds, school compounds, and available outdoor neighbourhood settings.

2016: The Year the Rain Poured Upon and We Played More

Pop-up Adventure Playground @ Baghdad Street

06 Aug 2016

What an amazing event we had! All our dreams came true when children continued having fun even despite the rain. It was all about play, play and more play!

Thank you to Pop-Up Adventure Play for all your guidance and wisdom in the field of playwork and to Singapore Wellness Association for letting us run our first Pop-Up Adventure Playground on Baghdad Street. Playstreets is such a wonderful and important initiative and we hope we can continue to support it.

2019: How Will Our Play Look This Year?

Pop-up Adventure Playground @ Clementi Woods

17 Sep 2016

We held a Pop-Up Adventure Playground at the Amphitheatre of Clementi Woods Park. Tucked away in the park, this space offered many play opportunities for the children between 9 months and 9 years old as over 100 people attended this pop-up. Children slid down the steep slopes on self-made cardboard slides, climbed trees, swung on tyre swings, cooked noodles in their dens and built rocket ships... as adults also engaged in their own play!

Thank you to Pop-Up Adventure Play for your continued guidance during our playworking journey. Thank you also to our volunteers Olivia Oh, Sheera Conway, Duyen Huynh and Hamish Winstanley for your tremendous help, as well as to Janee Monis Nigos for your wonderful photographs.

Pop-up Adventure Playground @ Tanderra

22 Oct 2016

This Pop-Up Adventure Playground was held at Tanderra, a boutique family members club at Dempsey Hill. Its beautiful heritage site offered an inspiring space and plenty of play opportunities for the children, who along with their parents showed up in droves! An estimated 300-strong happy crowd turned up to tinker with loose parts, roll tyres, slide down cardboard slides, build box forts, and play with whatever they liked, however they wished as the adults sat back and watched the play unfold!

We would like to record our appreciation to Pop-Up Adventure Play for their wonderful support and guidance, to Anjuli and the entire Tanderra team, thank you so much for this opportunity for us to come together and work hand in hand in making this celebration of child-directed play happen, and to all our volunteers - Ana, Eugenia, Hamish, Jacintha, Jiahui, Masturah, Olivia, Sheera, Sourabh and Voja, our heartfelt thanks and gratitude for your immense efforts and for always going that extra mile.

A special mention goes to Kenn Delbridge for his incredible photographs that capture so well the essence of play!

Pop-up Adventure Playground @ Playeum

10 Dec 2016

Our 5th and final pop-up for the year took place last Saturday at Playeum's Playazza. This time round we got to see children engage in a lot of socio-dramatic play from delivering babies, to building houses (including laying internet cables!) and riding cardboard trains. We hope everybody enjoyed themselves as much as we did!

Thank you to Pop-Up Adventure Play for their continuous support, Playeum for giving us access to their amazing outdoor space and to our volunteers (Achal, Ana, Duyen, Olivia, Reddy, Sourabh and Voja) - please know that we couldn't have done it without you.

Pop-up Adventure Playground @ Clementi Woods park

29 June 2019

What a turn out we had at our Clementi Woods Park Pop-Up Adventure Playground! We had a great mix of new families from the local area and our hard core Pop-Up fans come and play. Such a lovely feeling to see the children at peace, exploring, sliding, building, rolling drumming, drawing and splashing.

The biggest hit was the tarpaulin slide on the hill and of course, as always the Cardboard box creations. There was a cats house, a family shop, some robots and some objects that only the children knew what they were building and doing. We saw a lot of focused individual creations that required a lot of problem solving and determination to reach their end goal.

At times it was so busy with children playing, those who wanted to swing sticks around had to move consider the space and moved to a safer place to play. All the considerations that happen during child led play is learning.

We are so grateful to the West Coast Neighbourhood Committee for inviting us and allowing this community event to happen and of course our volunteers who always come with their passion to facilitate play and ensure that as adults we don't interrupt the play. Check out all the photos on the West Coast NC Facebook page.

We're hoping to see you all again at this venue soon!

Pop-up Adventure Playground @ Toa Payoh East Novena

23 Feb 2019

Ah. What a blast we had playing under the breezy communal space @ Toyah Payoh East Novena. We had all ages, abilities and mix of ethnicities connecting and sharing an experience. The unique steps surrounding the main play arena became a great obstacle, used for rolling, sliding and constructing. A real test of engineering ability and innovation, which seemed easy for those who came along today. As always the cardboard boxes proved to be the most versatile. My personal favourite was watching the tranquil and focused drawing happening, whilst being sprawled out on top the cardboard itself. Feeling safe, uninhibited and free to play. Thanks to the folks at Toa Payoh East Novena CC and our amazing Chapter Zero volunteers for all their hard work in making this event so successful. See you next time!
