About

Nonviolent Communication - An introductory learning and practice group

If you’re looking for a framework to support or enhance your practice of respectful, gentle or peaceful caregiving - Nonviolent Communication (NVC) provides a simple yet profound way of connecting with yourself and others through empathy, compassion and peaceful communication.

This 6 week fortnightly practice group looks to introduce the basics of the communication framework, where we dive into the concepts of NVC which include:

- Introducing the 4 pillars of NVC (observation, feelings, needs and requests)

- Practicing non-judgemental observation

- Building a vocabulary for feelings

- Identifying the needs at the roots of feelings

- Expressing requests versus making demands

- Practicing NVC in our daily lives

The practice group is open to parents, caregivers and educators who are either new to NVC or would like a refresher and a respectful and safe space to practice NVC with like-minded individuals.

Nonviolent communication is a process developed by mediator and psychologist, Dr Marshall Rosenberg, for supporting partnership and resolving conflict within people, relationships and society.

This practice group is led by parent coach and director of Chapter Zero, Joline Lim, as well as parent educator Sophia Klopp, both of whom have been practicing NVC in their personal, parenting and professional lives.

This is not a training workshop, and we will be joined by fellow parents who have been practicing NVC to various degrees to co-create a compassionate practice group where we can learn and explore safely together.

Participants have the option to  attend the “Nurturing Active Listening" practice group concurrently as we have designed both practice sessions to complement each other.

**Important to note:**

Sessions will need to be attended in sequence, and we will not be doing replays or recordings, to honour the integrity of privacy and safety of the group.

Please consider your personal capacity for learning and practice before signing up for the practice group.

We encourage full presence and participation during the session, and invite participants to dedicate 15-30 mins of down time after the practice group sessions to meet your needs of self care and self regulation.

Participants are encouraged to read the book, “Nonviolent Communication” (available for purchase or to be loaned from NLB)  so they may have access to full reading materials. Reading the chapters prior to the session is welcome but not a must.

We encourage participants to show up for the session and participate within their own capacity as we believe there will still be value in attending and learning from the sharing of the other participants.

We will require minimum of 10 participants to confirm the practice group by 1 May; and the group size will be capped at 20.
